Jelte Althuis (born 1967) is a passionate musician. Twenty-five years ago, he embraced the bass clarinet and has since been a fervent advocate of the instrument. Jelte has been a member of the Calefax Reed Quintet since 1994, where alongside the bass clarinet he also plays the basset horn. Since 2010 he has been exploring the rare and vulnerable sounds of the contrabass clarinet, and bringing them to a wider audience. As well as leading a busy performing career, Jelte is experienced both as an arranger and a coach for advanced musicians. He always strives to communicate through the music he plays, and to let it tell a story.
